Abstract
This study investigated the effects of depression levels and self-efficacy on the depression of 380 lonely frail elders in Gimhae area. Based on the study findings, practical countermeasures were suggested for improving elderly¡¯s psychological well-being and mental health. It was showed that 52.2% of the study subjects had mild and medium levels of depression, and other 33.4% had severe degree of depression. But, Only 11.5% of subjects admitted that they suffered from depression which showed very low level of self-recognition. Among sub-factors of the care-receiver efficacy scale, self-care strategies, relational coping with caregivers, performance-related quality of life, and accepting help were clarified as impacting factors of elderly¡¯s depression. Subjective health and economic conditions, and gender were also turned out as meaningful factors to effect on depression. Therefore, encouraging elders to decide and plan activities for themselves is needed to improve the quality of life in old age. Instead of delivering services without considering elder¡¯s opinions, the practitioners need to work together with elders for whole psycho-social intervention process for improving self-efficacy and mental health condition of lonely frail elders.
